Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Thorne Family

|
While Elvira brought warmth to the inside of the estate, a deadly storm was brewing on the outside.
Isabella’s public humiliation and the cancellation of the wedding had severely damaged the Thorne family’s reputation. In the criminal underworld, embarrassment was a currency paid back in blood. Isabella’s father, Victor Thorne, was not a man who accepted defeat. He was a ruthless New York kingpin looking to expand his territory into Chicago, and the marriage alliance had been his golden ticket.
Lorenzo sat in his soundproof basement command center, surrounded by his top lieutenants. The room was tense, filled with cigar smoke and the low murmur of violent strategies.
“Thorne’s men are moving into the South Side,” Rocco reported, pointing to a sprawling digital map on the wall. “They’re trying to buy out our shipping foremen. They’re offering double our rates to look the other way while they move weapons through our ports.”
Lorenzo’s jaw tightened. “If they buy the foremen, they control the supply lines. We cannot let them establish a foothold.”
“It’s not just the ports, Boss,” another lieutenant added grimly. “We’ve intercepted chatter. Isabella is demanding your head. She’s humiliated. She wants to hit the estate.”
Lorenzo’s eyes turned pitch black. He thought of Leo and Mia sleeping peacefully upstairs. He thought of Elvira, reading them stories. The thought of Isabella's men breaching the gates sent a surge of murderous rage through his veins.
“Double the perimeter guard,” Lorenzo commanded, his voice cold and absolute. “Nobody gets in or out without my personal authorization. Put snipers on the roof. If anyone from the Thorne family crosses the property line, shoot to kill.”
Rocco nodded, jotting down the orders. “What about the girl, Boss? Elvira? She’s a civilian. If things get ugly, she’s a liability.”
Lorenzo stood up, his massive frame casting a long shadow across the command table. He looked at Rocco with an intensity that made the hardened enforcer take a step back.
“Elvira is not a liability,” Lorenzo growled softly. “She is under my absolute protection. If anyone so much as looks at her wrong, I will personally end them. Is that understood?”
The room fell dead silent. His men exchanged careful, knowing glances. The boss wasn't just protecting a nanny. He was protecting something much more personal.

“Understood, Boss,” Rocco murmured.
Lorenzo left the basement, his mind racing. The war was coming, and he needed to make sure the woman sleeping upstairs was safe from the fallout.
