Chapter 1 - The Coldest Silence

|
The heavy cast-iron skillet slammed against the padlock with a deafening crack. Sparks flew across the pristine kitchen tiles, but the thick metal mechanism held. Chef Marco shouted for security, his voice rising in panic, but Elvira Vance didn’t care. She raised the heavy pan and swung again. Her muscles screamed in protest, fueled by pure adrenaline and the haunting image of two small children shoved into the freezing dark. On the third violent strike, the padlock’s hinge finally shattered. Elvira dropped the skillet, grabbed the heavy steel handle of the walk-in freezer, and pulled backward with all her weight.
A dense cloud of sub-zero vapor rolled out, biting instantly into her skin.
“Leo? Mia?” she called out, her voice shaking violently.
At first, she saw nothing but frosted metal shelves and hanging cuts of beef. Then, tucked in the furthest, darkest corner, she spotted a small, unmoving shape. Six-year-old Leo was sitting on the grated floor, his tiny velvet dinner jacket wrapped tightly around his four-year-old sister. His lips were a terrifying shade of blue. His eyes were half-closed, his eyelashes coated in white frost, but his small hands were still weakly trying to rub Mia’s arms to keep her warm. Mia wasn't moving at all.
“Oh my God,” Elvira gasped, her heart dropping into her stomach.
She fell to her knees on the icy floor, pulling both freezing children into her arms. Their skin felt like polished marble. She lifted Mia tightly against her chest and hauled Leo up by his waist, carrying them both out of the freezer and into the blinding heat of the catering kitchen.
“Call an ambulance!” Elvira screamed at the stunned kitchen staff, laying the children near the ovens. “Get blankets! Now!”
Before anyone could move, the swinging doors to the kitchen flew open. Isabella Thorne walked in, her immaculate smile freezing as she took in the scene.
“What on earth is happening here?” Isabella demanded, her voice dripping with artificial shock.
Elvira glared at her, pulling a stray tablecloth down to wrap around the shivering children.
“You locked them in,” Elvira stated, her voice echoing off the stainless steel.

Isabella’s eyes narrowed into dangerous, calculating slits. She looked at the broken lock, then at the children, and finally at Elvira. Instantly, her expression shifted into a flawless mask of theatrical horror.
“Security!” Isabella shrieked at the top of her lungs, stepping backward into the hallway. “Help! This waitress just tried to kidnap Lorenzo’s children and hide them in the freezer!”
