Chapter 3 - The Interrogation

Lorenzo Moretti didn't yell. He didn't order his men to attack. He simply walked forward, his presence suffocating the air out of the kitchen. He stopped in front of the stainless-steel table, his dark eyes analyzing the banded cash before slowly lifting his gaze to meet Elvira’s.
“Take your hands off her,” Lorenzo commanded softly.
The guards released Elvira instantly, stepping back. She rubbed her bruised arms, forcing herself to stand tall despite the violent trembling in her knees.
“Lorenzo, darling,” Isabella cried, rushing forward to place a delicate hand on his chest. “She tried to kidnap them. We found her stash. You need to have her dealt with before she—”
“Silence,” Lorenzo interrupted. He didn't look at his fiancée. He kept his eyes locked entirely on the waitress in the stained uniform.
“You broke the lock on my freezer,” Lorenzo said, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that sent shivers down Elvira’s spine.
“Yes,” Elvira said, refusing to drop her gaze. “Because your fiancée put them in there. I heard them scratching at the door.”
“She’s a liar!” Isabella shrieked. “Look at the money, Lorenzo! She was paid to take them!”
Lorenzo took a slow step closer to Elvira. He was towering, built like a fortress, and his eyes searched hers for any sign of deception. In his world, everyone lied. But the woman standing in front of him wasn't sweating. She wasn't begging for her life. She was furious.
“If I was kidnapping them,” Elvira said, her voice dropping to a fierce, steady whisper, “why would I put them in a sub-zero freezer where they would die in twenty minutes? Why would I scream for an ambulance? And why is your fiancée wearing silk shoes that are completely dry, while I was the one kneeling on the ice?”
Lorenzo’s eyes flicked downward. Isabella was wearing pristine silver heels. Elvira’s black work pants were soaked with melted frost at the knees.
“Rocco,” Lorenzo called out without turning his head.
His massive second-in-command stepped forward. “Yes, Boss.”
“Where are my brother’s children?”

“The paramedics have them in the medical suite upstairs. They’re stable. Leo is regaining consciousness.”
Lorenzo looked back at Elvira, his expression an unreadable mask of cold calculation. “If you are lying to me, I will bury you under this estate. But if you are telling the truth, I will owe you a debt I can never repay.”
