Chapter 12 - A Dangerous Spark

The air in the small bathroom suddenly felt suffocatingly thick.
Elvira’s breath caught in her throat. Lorenzo’s thumb slowly stroked the back of her hand, sending a jolt of electricity straight to her core. He was towering, dangerous, and bleeding, yet looking at him, Elvira felt an overwhelming, undeniable pull.
“Lorenzo, I…” she started, her voice barely a whisper.
He didn't let her finish. Lorenzo stood up, closing the tiny distance between them. He wrapped his uninjured arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his hard, muscular chest. Elvira gasped, her hands instinctively resting against his collarbones.
He looked down at her, his dark eyes burning with a hunger that had been building for weeks. He didn't ask for permission, and she didn't want him to.
Lorenzo leaned down and crushed his mouth against hers.
The kiss was desperate, fueled by the adrenaline of the ambush and the terrifying realization of how close they had come to losing everything. Elvira kissed him back with equal fervor, her fingers tangling in his dark hair. The fierce, untouchable mafia boss melted against her, pouring all of his protective rage and hidden affection into the kiss.
When they finally broke apart, both of them were breathing heavily. Lorenzo rested his forehead against hers, keeping her tightly in his embrace.
“I almost lost you today,” Lorenzo murmured, his voice rough with emotion. “When the bullets hit that glass, my heart stopped. I cannot lose you, Elvira.”
“You didn't,” she whispered, resting her head against his chest, listening to the rapid, powerful beat of his heart. “I’m right here.”
“The Thorne family crossed a line today,” Lorenzo stated, his tone shifting from passionate to lethal. The romantic moment gave way to the cold, harsh reality of their world. “They tried to kill my blood. They tried to kill the woman I care about. I am going to tear their empire apart piece by piece.”
Elvira looked up at him, seeing the demon that ruled Chicago staring back at her. She wasn't afraid of him. She was afraid for him.

“What happens now?” she asked.
“Now,” Lorenzo said, his jaw tightening into a ruthless line, “we go to war.”
