Chapter 5 - The Broken Alliance

|
Isabella backed away, her hands raised defensively, her perfect aristocratic facade crumbling into raw, pathetic terror.
“Lorenzo, he’s lying!” she shrieked, backing into the heavy wooden doorframe. “He’s just a confused child! He doesn't know what he’s saying!”
Lorenzo didn't speak. He took one step toward her. Then another. He moved with a terrifying, predatory grace, his dark eyes entirely devoid of mercy. When he reached her, he didn't strike her. He simply leaned in, his voice dropping to a whisper that chilled the blood of every guard in the room.
“You put my blood in a freezer,” Lorenzo stated, stating a fact that carried the weight of an execution order. “You tried to murder my brother's children to ensure there were no other heirs to my empire.”
“No! Please!” Isabella sobbed, tears ruining her expensive makeup. “My father will explain! It was just a misunderstanding!”
Lorenzo grabbed her by the arm. His grip was like iron. He didn't drag her to the basement or out to the woods. He dragged her out of the medical suite, down the grand marble staircase, and straight toward the glowing double doors of the ballroom.
Elvira followed silently, watching the most powerful man in the city tear his own engagement apart.
Lorenzo kicked the ballroom doors open. The orchestra stopped playing mid-note. Three hundred guests turned their heads, their champagne glasses frozen in the air. They watched in stunned silence as Lorenzo dragged his beautiful fiancée to the center of the dance floor and threw her to the marble floor.
“The wedding is canceled,” Lorenzo’s voice boomed through the cavernous room, echoing off the crystal chandeliers.
Murmurs of shock rippled through the crowd. Isabella’s father, a powerful New York boss, stepped forward with his security detail, his face purple with rage. “Moretti! What is the meaning of this?”
“Your daughter attempted to murder my nephew and niece,” Lorenzo snarled, pointing down at the sobbing woman on the floor. “The alliance is dead. Take your trash out of my house. If anyone from your family sets foot in Chicago again, I will return them to you in boxes.”

He turned his back on the humiliated New York family and walked straight toward Elvira. The entire ballroom watched as the mafia king stopped in front of the waitress in the stained uniform.
“Come with me,” Lorenzo commanded.
