Chapter 9 - The Media War

Before we could gear up to leave the safehouse, the wall-mounted television monitor in the briefing room flickered to life, showing a live breaking news alert from Chicago's Channel 5 News.
The screen displayed a high-definition image of me walking into the courthouse earlier that day in full combat gear.
A prominent local news anchor spoke in a grave tone: "Breaking news out of Cook County. A high-ranking military officer, Lieutenant Commander Madison Carter, is currently being sought by state authorities after allegedly using military weaponry to forcibly abduct her fourteen-year-old brother from a court-ordered custody proceeding."
The broadcast cut to a video clip filmed just thirty minutes ago outside the county jail.
Standing at a podium was my mother, Evelyn Carter. She had been released on a multi-million-dollar emergency bail paid by an anonymous corporate entity. She wore a sleek black suit, dabbing at fake tears with a lace handkerchief.
"My daughter has lost her mind," Evelyn sobbed into the microphones, her voice trembling dramatically for the cameras. "She suffered severe trauma during her overseas military deployments. She stormed that courtroom like a terrorist, attacked our family lawyer, and kidnapped my innocent baby boy! I am begging the federal government: save my son from his unhinged sister!"
"That hypocritical snake," Sergeant Vance growled, punching the wall beside the screen. "She's spinning the narrative to turn the public against us!"
"It's not just public opinion," Agent Vance said, looking down at his ringing encrypted phone. "She's using high-level political contacts to pressure my superiors. The Department of Justice just received a formal demand from the Governor's office to stand down our task force."
My phone chimed with a priority military flash code.
I answered it immediately. "Commander Carter."
The cold, sharp voice of my commanding general came through the speaker: "Madison, what the hell is happening in Chicago?! The Pentagon is receiving calls from three U.S. Senators claiming you've gone rogue with active-duty gear!"
"General, my family is tied to an international financial syndicate," I reported crisply. "They tried to traffic my brother to unlock stolen federal evidence."
A long pause echoed over the line.
"You have twelve hours, Commander," the General stated firmly. "Retrieve the evidence, secure the target, and shut down this syndicate. If you fail, I will be forced to send a military police unit to strip your command and take you into custody. Do you understand?"
"Understood, sir," I replied. "Twelve hours."

I cut the call, turned to Sergeant Vance, and picked up my tactical gear.
"Load the weapons," I ordered. "We're going to my parents' mansion."
