Chapter 4 - The Classified Indictment

|

We walked back into the courtroom ninety minutes later. The air in the room was suffocatingly tense.

My parents were sitting rigid at the defense table, whispering furiously with Bradley Collins. When they saw me enter without my combat helmet, holding Ethan’s hand, my father’s eyes flared with pure hatred.

Judge Reynolds took her seat at the elevated bench and tapped her gavel once.

"We are back on the record," she stated, her voice echoing clearly off the marble walls. "In light of the classified federal documentation submitted to this court, I am issuing the following rulings immediately."

Bradley Collins stood up quickly. "Your Honor, I must formally request a continuance so that defense counsel may review—"

"Denied, Mr. Collins," Judge Reynolds cut him off cold. "Furthermore, the defense table will refrain from interrupting."

She picked up a signed court document. "First, the emergency petition for custody filed by Richard and Evelyn Carter is hereby denied with prejudice."

My mother gasped loudly, slapping her hand over her mouth. "What?! No!"

"Second," the judge continued, ignoring her outburst, "temporary legal and physical guardianship of Ethan Carter is awarded immediately to his sister, Lieutenant Commander Madison Carter, under the provisions of the Federal Witness Protection Act."

"This is insane!" my father roared, slamming his palms on the wood as he surged out of his chair. "She’s an active-duty soldier! She isn't fit to raise a dog, let alone my son! Ethan is coming home with us today!"

"Mr. Carter, sit down!" Judge Reynolds demanded.

"No!" Richard snarled, his face contorting in rage as he pointed a finger at me. "You think you've won, Madison?! You think your little military badge makes you invincible?! I built everything you have! I own this city! I will spend every dime I have to tear your life apart!"

Before he could take another step toward us, the side doors of the courtroom burst open.

Four armed FBI tactical agents wearing heavy body armor swept into the room, followed by Special Agent Marcus Vance.

"Richard Carter! Evelyn Carter!" Agent Vance announced loudly, unholstering his federal badge. "You are both under arrest for federal wire fraud, attempted child exploitation, and grand money laundering!"

The courtroom went dead silent.

My mother shrieked in terror as two federal agents stepped behind her, pulling her arms back and clicking heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.

"Richard Carter, put your hands behind your back!" an agent ordered, stepping toward my father.

My father turned wildly toward his lawyer. "Bradley! Do something! Call the Senator! Call the Governor!"

Bradley Collins took two slow steps backward, raising his hands in defeat. "Richard... keep your mouth shut. I can't help you with a federal arrest warrant."

As the agents forced my father’s arms behind his back, he locked eyes with me. He didn't look like the powerful billionaire who had controlled my life for twenty years. He looked like a trapped animal.

"You're dead to me, Madison!" he screamed as they dragged him toward the side exit. "You hear me?! You're dead!"

I stood my ground, shielding Ethan behind my back, watching my parents get led away in chains.

"It's over, Ethan," I whispered softly.

"Is it really over, Maddie?" Ethan asked, clutching my arm.

I looked at Agent Vance, who gave me a subtle, grim shake of his head.

I knew the truth. Arresting my parents was only the first layer. The shadow syndicate they owed fifty million dollars to was still out there—and they were coming for Ethan's trust next.
