Chapter 14 - The Wiretap Recording

|
The federal safehouse was quiet when we pulled into the alleyway twenty minutes later.
Using a tactical wiretap receiver tuned to the safehouse's internal frequency, I listened to the live audio inside the basement briefing room.
"Is the strike team ready at the airfield?" Marcus Vance's voice echoed through my earpiece.
Another voice answered—a voice I recognized instantly. Evelyn Carter.
"They're ready, Marcus," my mother said coolly over the phone speaker. "The moment Madison walks through that door with the drive, eliminate her. Make it look like a Syndicate ambush. Then bring Ethan to Hangar 4. The private jet leaves for Zurich at dawn."
"And my ten million dollar cut?" Marcus Vance asked.
"Transferred the moment Ethan signs the biometric clearance in Switzerland," Evelyn replied. "My daughter thought she was so clever playing soldier. She has no idea she's been delivering the key straight into my hands."
I pulled the earpiece out, my face turning to absolute stone.
"Vance," I whispered to my second-in-command. "They're planning to execute us the moment we walk through the front door."
"What are your orders, Commander?"
"We don't use the front door," I said, unholstering two non-lethal flash-bang grenades. "We blow the rear ventilation grate, deploy tear gas, and take Marcus Vance alive before he can delete the digital logs."
"Copy that."
We moved to the back alley, placing breaching charges onto the iron reinforced ventilation shaft.
I looked at my watch. 0430 hours.
Twelve hours were almost up. The Pentagon's deadline was ticking down.
