Chapter 2 - The Sealed Chamber

|

Judge Margaret Reynolds read the first page of the packet twice. Then she read it a third time, and I saw the exact moment her perception of this entire custody battle shattered.

She looked up from the paper, her sharp gaze cutting across the room. She looked at me, then at my parents, and finally down at the red-stamped seals on the classified file. Her jaw tightened into a hard, unyielding line.

Without saying a word, she raised her heavy wooden gavel and brought it down with a crack that echoed like a gunshot.

"All non-essential personnel will vacate this courtroom immediately!" she commanded. "No exceptions! Clear the gallery!"

The public gallery erupted into confused whispers. Local reporters traded startled glances. Even the armed court deputies looked surprised, glancing at each other before stepping toward the exit doors.

Within sixty seconds, the bailiffs had swept the room clean. The heavy double doors at the back clicked shut, and the electronic privacy locks engaged with a low, mechanical hum.

My mother was the first to break the silence. She stood up, her diamond necklace sparkling under the fluorescent lights.

"Your Honor, this is completely uncalled for," Evelyn protested, her voice shrill. "We are prominent citizens of this city. We have a right to an open hearing!"

Judge Reynolds didn't even look at her. She kept her eyes locked on me.

"Lieutenant Commander Carter," the judge said, her voice dropping into a serious register. "This official packet identifies you not merely as a family member, but as the primary military liaison for an ongoing federal task force investigation involving your family’s firm."

"That is correct, Your Honor," I replied, standing straight at attention.

"It also states that the United States Department of Justice has been monitoring this specific custody proceeding for the last six months."

"Yes, ma'am."

Bradley Collins stepped forward, holding his sprained wrist against his ribs. "Your Honor, this is highly irregular! My clients have received zero formal notice of any federal investigation. This is a gross violation of due process!"

"Sit down, Mr. Collins," Judge Reynolds snapped.

"Your Honor, I must object—"

"I said sit down, counselor, before I have you removed in handcuffs!" the judge roared, leaning over her bench.

Bradley swallowed hard and backed into his leather chair, his confidence completely destroyed.

The judge looked back down at the file, turning to page three. "The documents provided here indicate that the multi-million-dollar trust left to Ethan Carter is not merely a private inheritance. It is currently designated as evidence in an active federal asset-laundering case involving Carter Global Logistics."

My father’s face turned ashen white. He slammed his fists onto the table. "That’s a lie! My father built that company! Madison is using her military rank to frame us because she hates this family!"

"Silence!" Judge Reynolds demanded. "Richard Carter, if you utter another word without my permission, you will spend the night in county lockup."

She closed the red file slowly, laying her hands flat over its cover.

"This court is taking an immediate ninety-minute recess," Judge Reynolds declared. "Lieutenant Commander Carter, you and your brother will remain in my private chambers under federal guard. Mr. and Mrs. Carter, you will stay right at that table. Nobody leaves this building."
