Three months later.
The Pacific ocean breeze blew gently across the cliffs of Point Loma in San Diego. The palm trees swayed under the warm California sun, a world away from the freezing snow and dark vaults of Switzerland.
Madison stood on the back patio of her new home overlooking the ocean. She was wearing casual clothes—jeans and a grey sweater—her hair tied back in a loose ponytail.
Down on the grass, Ethan was flying his newly upgraded drone, guiding it through a series of complex aerial loops while Arthur sat in a wooden lawn chair nearby, holding a pair of binoculars and shouting tactical flight adjustments.
"Keep your elevation steady, Ethan!" Arthur called out, laughing. "You're drifting into the sea breeze!"
"I've got it, Grandpa!" Ethan laughed back, adjusting his digital controller with expert precision.
Madison took a long sip of her iced coffee, feeling a deep, unfamiliar sense of peace settle over her chest. The nightmare that had haunted her family for twelve years was finally over. The trust fund was secured, her parents' names had been cleared by the Pentagon, and her family was whole again.
Her phone chimed on the patio table beside her.
