Chapter 7 - The Safehouse Protocol

|

I moved through the shadow of the train cars like a ghost, using the tactical training honed during three deployments in denied territory.

The three remaining mercenaries backed up toward their sedan, firing blind bursts into the dark eaves of the depot. Their bullets ricocheted off steel girders with sharp, ringing whines.

"Spread out!" their squad leader barked, his accent distinctly Eastern European. "Find her!"

Bad command. Spreading out against a sniper in close quarters is suicide.

I slipped beneath a rusted tanker car, coming up behind the second shooter. I grabbed his rifle barrel, drove my elbow hard into his throat, and swept his legs out from under him. As he hit the concrete, I secured his weapon and delivered a sharp strike to his jaw, knocking him cold.

The squad leader turned at the sound of his man falling, but it was already too late.

I emerged from the shadows, pointing my rifle straight at the bridge of his nose from five feet away.

"Freeze," I commanded.

The leader froze instantly, his finger hovering over his trigger. He looked at the two fallen men behind him, then slowly lowered his weapon to the ground.

"Who hired you?" I demanded, my voice cold as ice. "Talk!"

The man let out a bitter, blood-spotted laugh. "Your father's money doesn't mean anything anymore, Commander. He was just a middleman. You have no idea who actually owns that trust fund."

Before I could press him further, high-pitched police sirens echoed from the street outside. Three federal task force cruisers tore through the rusted gate, lights flashing blue and red across the wet concrete.

Agent Marcus Vance stepped out of the lead cruiser, his weapon drawn, surrounded by a squad of armed FBI SWAT agents.

"Clear!" Agent Vance yelled, seeing me standing over the captured squad. "Commander Carter, are you and the boy uninjured?!"

"We're fine, Agent Vance," I called back, lowering my rifle. "These guys tried to ambush us three miles from the courthouse."

Agent Vance walked over, kicking the squad leader's dropped rifle away. He knelt down and pulled back the captured mercenary's collar, revealing a dark black tattoo inked onto his neck—a stylized raven clutching a broken key.

Agent Vance's face turned pale.

"What is it?" I asked, stepping closer. "Do you recognize that mark?"

"This isn't your father's private security," Agent Vance whispered, looking up at me with grave concern. "This is 'The Syndicate.' A global shadow network that uses offshore shell trusts to finance black-market operations."

"What does that have to do with my brother?"

"Your grandfather didn't just leave Ethan a trust fund, Madison," Agent Vance revealed, his voice barely audible over the idling engines. "He left him the master encryption key to the Syndicate's entire financial ledger."
