Chapter 3 - The Grandfather's Vault

The judge's private chambers were lined with heavy law books and dark mahogany panels. Two armed federal marshals stood posted inside the door, while another guarded the hallway outside.
Ethan sat on a leather sofa, clutching a cup of water with both hands. His hands were still trembling.
I removed my ballistic helmet, setting it on the coffee table beside my rifle, which remained safely locked and flagged. I sat down beside my little brother and placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Are you okay, kiddo?" I asked softly.
Ethan looked up at me, his eyes wide and filled with tears. "Maddie... is it true? Is Dad really in trouble with the government?"
"It’s complicated, Ethan," I said gently. "Grandpa knew what Dad and Mom were doing before he died. He knew they were using company accounts to hide illegal money from overseas investors."
"That’s why Grandpa gave me the trust fund, isn't it?" Ethan whispered. "He told me before he passed away... he said, 'Ethan, don't ever sign anything your father gives you. No matter how much he begs.'"
I felt a cold rage flare in my chest. "Did Dad try to make you sign papers?"
Ethan nodded slowly, reaching into his inner jacket pocket. He pulled out a crumpled sheet of paper covered in complex legal jargon.
"Two nights ago," Ethan said, his voice shaking. "Dad came into my bedroom late at night. He was drinking. He grabbed my shoulder and said if I didn't sign this conservatorship agreement today, he’d send me away to a military boarding school in South America where nobody would ever hear from me again."
I took the paper from his hands and scanned the text. It was an irrevocable power-of-attorney assignment, transferring full management of Ethan's trust fund to Richard and Evelyn Carter the moment they secured custody.
It wasn't just custody they wanted. It was an immediate fifty-million-dollar cash influx to cover their massive offshore debts.
The side door opened, and Judge Reynolds walked into her office, accompanied by a tall man wearing a dark charcoal suit and an FBI badge clipped to his belt.
"Commander Carter," the agent said, extending his hand. "I’m Special Agent Marcus Vance, Head of the Financial Crimes Task Force. Good work holding the line in the courtroom."
"Agent Vance," I acknowledged, shaking his hand firmly. "My brother just handed me this. My father threatened to traffic him out of the country if he didn't sign over his estate."
Agent Vance took the document and inspected it, a dark grimace crossing his face. "This gives us everything we need for an emergency federal arrest warrant."
Judge Reynolds walked behind her desk, looking down at Ethan with deep sympathy.
"Agent Vance," the judge said calmly. "I am issuing an immediate emergency order granting temporary protective custody of Ethan Carter to his sister, Lieutenant Commander Madison Carter."

"Thank you, Your Honor," I said, relief washing over me like a tidal wave.
"Don't thank me yet, Commander," Judge Reynolds warned, looking me dead in the eye. "Your parents have extremely dangerous associates. The second they realize they’ve lost control of this trust, they won't just use lawyers anymore."
