Chapter 34 - The Shattered Ledger

On the monitor above, Ethan's script began systematically wiping the hard drives inside the vault, overwriting thirty years of black-market intelligence with random digital noise.

Row after row of server racks began to smoke, their cooling fans screaming as Ethan's virus forced the processors into an irreversible thermal overload.

"No! No! Stop it!" Victor shrieked, struggling frantically against Madison's grip. "That is thirty years of work! That is the entire shadow network!"

"Your network is dead, Victor," Madison said coldly.

She pulled Victor away from the rack, spun him around, and snapped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists, pinning his arms tightly behind his back.

The heavy iron door at the entrance of the vault suddenly groaned. The mechanical locking pins retracting as Arthur Carter used the manual bypass code from the outside console.

The door swung open.

Arthur stepped into the smoking vault, holding his submachine gun at the ready, with Ethan trailing right behind him, carrying his lit laptop under his arm.

Ethan looked up at the glowing, melting servers, then looked at his sister.

"I wiped it, Maddie," Ethan said, offering her a small, proud grin. "Every single file. The Architect doesn't have a secret left."

Arthur walked up to Victor Sterling, looking down at his old enemy with cold satisfaction.

"Federal marshals and Swiss authorities are entering the cathedral right now, Victor," Arthur said smoothly. "You're going to spend the rest of your natural life in a dark cell where nobody will ever hear your voice again."
