Chapter 4: Reclaiming the Grid

Chapter 4: Reclaiming the Grid
My villa featured a highly sophisticated smart-home system that I had designed, programmed, and installed myself. Every single function operated on an encrypted network.
Trevor loved to show off the technology to his friends, but he was completely oblivious to one crucial fact: only I possessed the master administrative codes.
With a few rapid strokes on my keyboard, I initiated a total system takeover.
First, I cut the blaring country music. From my window, I watched the immediate confusion ripple through the living room as a dead silence filled the air.
Next, I engaged the automated perimeter protocols. I locked every single electronic exit, reinforcing the deadbolts on the front door, the side entries, and the heavy glass sliders leading to the terrace.
Then, I accessed the climate control grid. I overrode the thermostats, forcing the powerful industrial HVAC units to pump maximum freezing air into every single room.
Within minutes, the atmosphere inside the villa shifted from a raucous celebration to a freezing trap. I watched through the glass as Evelyn began frantically banging her fists against the thick, unyielding glass of the terrace door.

“Trevor, open this door right now! It is getting freezing in here!” she screamed, her breath fogging up the pane.
Trevor pulled on the heavy handle with all his might. It didn't budge a single millimeter. He tapped the digital wall panel repeatedly, but the screen remained locked, displaying a massive, solid crimson padlock.
