Chapter 2: The Command of the Shed

I ignored her and ran upstairs to the master bedroom, my heart pounding violently against my ribs. When I pushed the door open, the sight made my blood run cold.

Three cheap air mattresses defiled the polished hardwood floor. All of my designer dresses had been carelessly tossed out of the closet. My professional suits—the ones I wore to international board meetings—were stuffed into large black garbage bags in the corner.

And my bed, my beautiful, expensive custom bed, was completely gone.

I marched back downstairs, trembling with a volatile mixture of pure rage and total disbelief. I found my husband, Trevor, in the modern kitchen, casually pouring himself a glass of aged whiskey.

“Where is my bed, Trevor?” I demanded, my fists clenched tightly at my sides.

He took a slow sip, refusing to meet my eyes. “My mother thought the children would sleep much better in your large room, so we made some adjustments. We put a nice folding bed in the garden shed for you. There is plenty of light and fresh air out there. Stop complaining.”

Evelyn approached me then, her lips curving into a smug, venomous grin.

“Look, Allison, my son earned all of this by the simple act of marrying you,” she whispered. “It was about time you finally started sharing your wealth with the people who matter most.”

At that exact moment, the illusion shattered. To them, I was never family. I was just a bank card with legs, waiting to be cleared out and discarded.

A cold, lethal sense of clarity washed over me. I slowly smiled.

“You are absolutely right, Trevor,” I said softly. “Fresh air is wonderful for people who are about to become completely homeless.”
