Chapter 6 - The Escape

The drive into the city was suffocatingly silent. Elena sat in the passenger seat, staring blankly out the window as the sprawling, wealthy suburbs faded into the dense concrete of the downtown financial district.

"Where are we going?" she finally whispered, her voice hoarse from crying.

"Somewhere they can't find us," I replied, keeping my eyes on the road.

We pulled into the underground parking garage of a luxury hotel downtown. I didn't use my corporate card or my usual reservations account. I walked up to the concierge and booked their top-floor security suite using a prepaid card, registering us under Elena’s maiden name—a name my mother completely despised and never bothered to remember.

Once we were securely inside the suite, with the deadbolts locked and the heavy curtains drawn, the adrenaline finally began to drain from my system.

Elena sat gingerly on the edge of the plush sofa, holding a glass of water I had poured for her. She looked incredibly fragile, shadows dark beneath her beautiful eyes.

"I need to call your doctor," I said, pulling out my phone. "I need to make sure the baby is okay. I need to make sure you are okay."

"Daniel, please, don't make a scene," Elena pleaded, fresh tears welling up. "Your mother will destroy you in the press. She knows everyone."

"I don't care about the press," I said fiercely, kneeling before her. "I only care about you. Let the doctor look at you. Then, you are going to tell me exactly what has been happening in that house."
