Chapter 14 - The Final Evidence

I opened the bank director's email. Attached were the final pieces of the puzzle.
The first attachment was a series of high-definition surveillance images taken from a private banking branch downtown. It clearly showed Lucas presenting the forged transfer documents to a teller, smiling arrogantly.
The second attachment was even more damning. It was an automated audio recording, which the bank legally required and routinely captured for any wire transfer exceeding five hundred thousand dollars.
I clicked play on the audio file. The room filled with my mother’s unmistakable, sharp voice, captured over a speakerphone as she authorized the final transfer to Meridian Wellness.
"Just process the paperwork," my mother’s voice snapped on the recording. "Daniel completely trusts me. He doesn't look at these specific ledgers. If anyone ever asks about the missing funds, he’ll naturally just blame his wife. She has expensive tastes."
The recording clicked off.
Elena sat on the sofa beside me, listening to the absolute malice in my mother's voice. For the first time all day, her hands completely stopped trembling. The fear that had held her hostage for three months was entirely replaced by a cold, hard clarity.

She looked up at me, her beautiful eyes fierce and unyielding.
"Let’s go," Elena said, standing up and smoothing down her maternity dress. "Let's go home and finish this."
