Chapter 17 - The Audio Confession

The video was damning enough, but I wasn't finished. I let the silence hang in the room for a few seconds before playing the final piece of evidence.
The bank’s audio recording filled the dining room, my mother’s voice crisp and clear.
"Daniel completely trusts me. He doesn't look at these specific ledgers. If anyone ever asks about the missing funds, he’ll naturally just blame his wife..."
No one in the dining room moved a muscle. The board members looked absolutely horrified. The two society reporters were furiously typing notes into their phones, capturing every single second of the scandal of the decade.
Elena sat quietly in her chair, her fingers closing tightly around mine. She looked incredibly strong.
My mother recovered first, relying on her lifetime of manipulation. She stepped away from the table, trying to project authority.
"Your father built this company for me!" she screamed, pointing a trembling finger at me. "He would never, ever allow you to humiliate me like this in my own home!"
"My father anticipated exactly what you would do," I replied coldly.
The dining room doors opened again. Priya Shah, the independent trustee, walked in carrying a massive, leather-bound estate ledger.

"Good evening," Priya said professionally, adjusting her glasses. "As the trustee, it is my duty to inform you that your late husband heavily amended this trust after discovering your earlier, unauthorized withdrawals years ago."
Priya opened the ledger. "Any beneficiary found actively involved in fraud loses their income rights immediately. Furthermore, any director involved is to be removed by the majority voting trustee."
