Chapter 16 - The Presentation

My mother’s confident smile finally cracked, her eyes darting nervously between the suitcases and the security officers.
"Daniel, what is the meaning of this?" she snapped, her voice losing its polite, public edge. "You are embarrassing yourself in front of our guests."
I didn't answer her. I walked over to the multimedia credenza in the corner of the room, connected my laptop, and synced it to the massive flat-screen television mounted on the wall.
"I apologize for interrupting dinner," I said to the confused board members and reporters. "But as my mother was just discussing company leadership, I thought it was crucial to review the latest financial portfolio."
I pressed a button on my keyboard.
Massive, undeniable transfer records appeared on the screen, highlighted in bright red. They were followed immediately by the invoices for Lucas’s underground gambling debts, the deed to the beach villa, and direct, wire payments made to a known handwriting forger.
My mother slammed her hands down on the dining table. "Turn that off! These are private family matters!"
"Fraud stops being a private family matter when you systematically steal from a corporate trust, forge a managing director’s signature, and launder the money through offshore shell companies," I stated, my voice echoing like thunder.
Lucas stood up so fast his chair tipped over backward. "You can’t prove I knew anything about those transfers! You're making this up!"

"I figured you'd say that," I replied calmly.
I pressed another key. The bank's surveillance footage played on the screen, clearly showing Lucas sliding the forged documents across the bank counter.
