Chapter 6 - THE HEAVY PRICE|

Adrian scrambled up off the floor, wiping his eyes with his ruined sleeve, holding the ultrasound scan tightly inside his suit pocket.
"Doctor," Adrian breathed, stepping into the surgeon's path. "Please. Tell me she's alive."
Dr. Aris stopped, his eyes heavy with profound exhaustion. He looked at Adrian's disheveled state, his blood-smeared shirt, and the raw grief etched into his face.
"We managed to stop the internal hemorrhaging," Dr. Aris said quietly. "We repaired her liver and set her femur. But... her body took an extraordinary amount of physical trauma, Mr. Vale."
"Is she going to wake up?" Adrian demanded, his voice cracking.
"She suffered severe oxygen deprivation during the crash," Dr. Aris explained softly. "She is currently in a deep coma and relying on a mechanical ventilator. The next forty-eight hours will tell us if her brain function will recover."
Adrian swallowed hard, his voice dropping to a terrified whisper. "And... the baby?"
Dr. Aris lowered his head, a look of deep sorrow crossing his face. "The blunt-force impact to her abdomen was catastrophic, Mr. Vale. We performed an emergency intervention, but... there was no heartbeat. The fetus could not be saved. I am truly sorry."
The hallway seemed to spin around Adrian. The lights dimmed, the air turned ice-cold, and a dark, suffocating abyss opened beneath his feet.
His wife was in a coma. His child was dead.
And the man who had ordered that flatbed truck was sitting in an executive suite at Vale Meridian Logistics, preparing to take over his life.

"Can I see her?" Adrian asked, his voice suddenly dropping into a terrifyingly flat, emotionless tone.
"Briefly," Dr. Aris nodded. "ICU Room 3."
