Chapter 4 - THE SACRIFICE|

Adrian forced his eyes to scan down the second page of the letter, his breathing shallow and jagged.

You thought you were clever, Adrian, hiding the 'off-book' transport contracts in your secondary logistics server. But you forgot that before I married you, I worked for four years as a senior forensic auditor for the Department of Justice.

Your COO, Julian Vance, has been using your eastern freight lines to move illegal arms and un-taxed cartel capital for the past two years. He has been setting you up. Every document, every illegal manifest, bears your forged digital signature. Julian and his backers in the syndicate have built a trap around you. They were planning to federalize your assets and have you indicted by the end of this month—or have you eliminated if you proved uncooperative.

Adrian stared at the ink in absolute horror. Julian Vance. His trusted second-in-command for a decade. The man who had stood as his best man at their wedding.

I could not let them destroy you, Adrian. No matter how deeply you broke my heart, I refused to let those vipers put you in a cage or a grave.

For the last ninety days, while you were spending your evenings with Madison, I was meeting secretly with Federal Prosecutor Vance Sterling. I used my family's legacy assets—my father's private lakefront estate, my inheritance, my personal stock portfolio—to buy back the forged debt ledgers from Julian’s cartel handlers.

This morning at 10:00 A.M., I signed over the last of my family’s land to fully clear your name and secure full federal immunity for you. The original ledgers implicating Julian Vance are inside the safe in my dressing room. The code is our wedding date.

I gave up everything I owned today, Adrian. Not for Vale Meridian Logistics. But to ensure that when you finally look in the mirror, you are at least a free man.

Tears rained down Adrian’s cheeks, smudging the dark ink on the page.

She had given away her ancestral home, her father's legacy, and her entire fortune to save him from prison while he was sitting in a luxury suite buying diamonds for a model who couldn't even remember his mother's name.

I am leaving for my sister’s home in Vermont tonight. The divorce papers are attached to the back of this letter. I have already signed them. I am asking for nothing in return. No alimony. No property.

I am leaving you free, Adrian. Free of Julian's trap. Free of your debts. And free of me.

May you like

Goodbye,

Elena.
