Chapter 17 - BITTER RECKONING|

Two weeks passed.
Elena was moved out of the ICU into a private recovery suite. Her physical strength was returning slowly, though her left leg remained in a heavy brace and she walked with the aid of a cane.
The news of the federal indictments had blown open across the nation. Julian Vance and Dominic Thorne were facing life sentences without parole. Vale Meridian Logistics had been placed under federal receivership, its illegal branches dismantled forever.
Adrian sat on the small sofa in her recovery room. He had surrendered all his corporate authority, signed over his personal wealth into a blind trust, and spent every day managing her care.
Elena sat by the window, wearing a simple navy dress, looking out at the autumn leaves falling over the hospital gardens.
"The lawyers called today," Elena said quietly, her voice steady and clear. "The federal immunity deal is finalized. You are completely clear, Adrian. You will not face charges."
"I don't care about the immunity, Elena," Adrian said softly from the sofa.
"I know," she replied, turning her head to look at him.
Her gray eyes were no longer filled with pain—they were filled with a calm, absolute clarity that was far more terrifying.
"I listened to the tape on your laptop," Adrian confessed, his voice trembling. "The one you left in the safe."
Elena looked back out the window. "I recorded that when I still believed we had a home."
"Elena... please," Adrian begged, stepping toward her chair, dropping to one knee before her. "I know I ruined everything. I know I lost our child. I know I broke every vow I ever made to you. But let me spend the rest of my life trying to earn your forgiveness. I don't want the company. I don't want the money. I just want you."
Elena reached out, her cool fingers touching his jaw gently. For a second, Adrian thought he saw a flash of the love she used to hold for him.
"I forgive you, Adrian," Elena whispered softly.

Adrian’s eyes filled with tears of hope. "You do?"
"Yes," she said gently, pulling her hand back. "I forgive you so that I don't have to carry hatred in my heart for the rest of my life. But forgiveness is not a marriage, Adrian. I am still leaving for Vermont tomorrow."
