Chapter 3 - THE SILENT OBSERVER|

Adrian’s hands shook so violently he almost dropped the envelope onto the dirty floor. He pulled out three neatly folded pages of heavy bond paper.

The top of the letter bore the crest of a prominent law firm in downtown Chicago—Vane & Sterling Legal Services. The date at the top was stamped with that morning's date: 8:30 A.M.

He unfolded the paper. The ink was dark, precise, and completely unwavering.

Adrian,

If you are reading this, it means I did not make it back from my meeting downtown. Or perhaps it means I simply didn't have the courage to hand this to you face-to-face.

When you left the house this morning, you told me I looked like I was going to a funeral. You were right. I was going to bury the last seven years of my life.

I know about Madison Cole.

Adrian choked back a sharp gasp, a wave of sickening shame crashing over his chest. He closed his eyes, remembering how clever he thought he had been. The encrypted phones, the secondary bank accounts, the hushed late-night calls from his home office.

She had known.

I have known about her for eleven months, Adrian. I knew about the penthouse apartment on 5th Street you bought through your holding company. I knew about the silver bracelet from Milan—I found the receipt in your tuxedo jacket after the charity gala last November. I knew about the weekends you claimed were 'freight line inspections' in Atlanta.

A sob tore from Adrian’s throat. He pressed a hand against his mouth, tears blurring his vision as he read her words.

I did not scream at you. I did not confront you. Not because I am weak, Adrian, and not because I did not care. I stayed silent because I was watching you. I wanted to see if the man I married seven years ago—the man who cried in my arms when his father died, the man who built an empire with his bare hands—was still inside you.

Instead, I watched you turn into a man who mistakes vanity for love, and noise for devotion.

I could have divorced you months ago. I could have taken half of Vale Meridian Logistics and left you with the scandal you so richly deserved. But three months ago, I discovered something far more dangerous than your infidelity.

May you like

I discovered who you were really doing business with.

Adrian froze, his heart dropping into an abyss.
