Chapter 20 - THE UNSEEN THREAT|

The rain drummed loudly against the roof of Adrian’s truck as he sat in the dark driveway, watching the warm yellow lights of Elena’s farmhouse.
Suddenly, he saw a shadow move across the porch.
He blinked, his heart skipping a beat as he saw Elena walking down the rain-soaked gravel driveway under a red umbrella, coming straight toward his vehicle.
Adrian quickly opened his truck door, stepping out into the pouring rain, pulling his coat tight around his shoulders.
"Elena?" he called out over the roar of the wind. "Is something wrong with the house?"
Elena stopped six feet away from him. The rain splashed against her umbrella, her gray eyes shining under the dim driveway lantern.
"You've been sitting in the rain for two hours, Adrian," she said, her voice soft against the storm.
"The wind came in fast from the north," Adrian explained quietly, water running down his face. "I wanted to make sure the old oak tree near your roof didn't drop a branch."
Elena looked at his soaked hair, his humble clothes, and the utter sincerity in his dark eyes. The wall of cold anger she had carried for months seemed to soften, just a fraction, in the cool rain.
"Come inside," Elena said quietly. "I made tea."
Adrian froze, a wave of profound, overwhelming emotion surging through his chest. "Are you sure?"
"Yes," she offered a tiny, tentative smile. "I'm sure."
Adrian took a step forward, his heart leaping with a spark of hope he hadn't felt in a year. "Elena, I—"
BEEP-BEEP.
A high-pitched satellite alert chimed violently from the dashboard inside Adrian’s truck.
Adrian paused, frowning, looking back at his vehicle. He reached inside and picked up his secure military-grade satellite receiver—the one connected directly to the federal witness protection portal.
A new text message flashed across the screen from an encrypted international address:
“Did you really think Dominic Thorne was the top of the pyramid, Adrian? Your wife’s father didn't leave her a lakefront estate. He left her a stolen cartel account worth two hundred million dollars. Look behind you.”
Adrian’s blood turned to ice. He spun around instantly.
Through the rain and the thick pine trees behind Elena’s farmhouse, two high-powered red laser tracking dots flickered across the white wooden siding of her porch, slowly moving toward the back of Elena’s cream sweater.
"Elena! GET DOWN!" Adrian screamed, throwing his body forward into the rain.

BANG!
A deafening rifle crack echoed through the quiet Vermont mountains, shattering the night storm into complete, terrifying chaos.
