Chapter 9 - The First Weekend

|

With the immediate corporate crisis stabilized, Claire finally allowed herself to take a weekend completely off.

She drove out to the Whitmore family estate in Virginia, a sprawling, historic property surrounded by dense forests and rolling hills. It was a place Adrian had always hated, claiming it was too quiet and too far from the city's social scene.

For Claire, it was a sanctuary.

Noah was already there, running barefoot across the massive front lawn, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Elena had recently adopted.

"Mommy!" Noah yelled, spotting her car pulling up the gravel driveway. He sprinted toward her, practically tackling her legs as she stepped out.

"Hey, little man," Claire laughed, scooping him up into a massive hug, burying her face in his warm neck. "Did you miss me?"

"Aunt Elena let me eat ice cream for breakfast!" Noah announced proudly.

"She did, did she?" Claire shot a playful glare at her sister, who was walking out onto the porch holding two glasses of lemonade.

"I am the fun aunt. It is literally in my job description," Elena defended herself smoothly, handing Claire a glass. "Besides, you've been practically living in that office for a month. He needed a little spoiling."

"Thank you," Claire said sincerely, taking a sip of the cold drink.

They spent the entire weekend completely disconnected from the outside world. There were no urgent emails, no legal briefings, and absolutely no mention of Adrian.

They built a massive fort out of sofa cushions in the living room, roasted marshmallows over a bonfire in the backyard, and took long, quiet walks through the woods.

On Sunday evening, after Noah had finally fallen asleep, completely exhausted from a day of running, Claire and Elena sat on the back porch, watching the stars emerge in the clear night sky.

"You look different, Claire," Elena observed quietly, wrapped in a thick blanket.

"How so?"

"Lighter," Elena said. "When you were with Adrian, you always looked like you were holding your breath. Like you were constantly bracing for an impact."

Claire looked out at the dark treeline, reflecting on her sister's words.

"I was," Claire admitted softly. "I was always trying to anticipate his moods, trying to fix problems before he even noticed them. I thought that was what a good wife was supposed to do."

"You were protecting him."

"I was protecting the illusion of him," Claire corrected. "I realized something this week, Elena. I don't miss him. I miss the man I thought he was going to be, but that man never actually existed."

Elena reached over and squeezed Claire's hand. "The man who exists now is about to face a federal judge. And you are running a billion-dollar empire. I think you won this round."

May you like

"I didn't want to win a war," Claire sighed, resting her head against the back of her chair. "I just wanted peace."

"You have it now," Elena promised.
