Chapter 14 - The Trial Concludes

|
The federal trial of Adrian Vale was a highly publicized, media-saturated spectacle.
Claire did not attend the proceedings. She had provided all necessary documentation and sworn affidavits during the discovery phase, completely insulating herself from the theatrical drama of the courtroom.
She was sitting in her corner office, reviewing the final drafts of the Sterling Global partnership agreement, when Katherine walked in, looking unusually somber.
"The jury reached a verdict," Katherine announced, closing the heavy oak doors behind her.
Claire set her pen down, her heart skipping a beat despite her practiced calm. "And?"
"Guilty on all counts," Katherine reported, her voice steady. "Wire fraud, embezzlement, tax evasion, and obstruction of justice."
Claire let out a long, slow breath. The finality of the word hung in the air, heavy and absolute.
"What is the sentence?" Claire asked.
"The judge wasn't lenient. Twelve years in a federal penitentiary, without the possibility of early parole. Plus, full financial restitution to Whitmore Holdings and the philanthropic trust."
Claire looked out the massive window at the city skyline. Twelve years. Noah would be a teenager by the time Adrian walked free.
"He tried to appeal for leniency based on his prior charitable work," Katherine added, a hint of disgust in her tone. "The judge explicitly cited the fact that he used those charities as a shield to steal from his own family. It did not go well for him."
"Did he say anything?" Claire asked quietly.
"He blamed his financial advisors. He blamed market pressures. He blamed everyone but himself, right until the bailiff put the handcuffs on him," Katherine said.
Claire nodded slowly. It was exactly what she expected. Adrian was fundamentally incapable of accepting responsibility for his own actions.
"It's over, Claire," Katherine said softly, walking over to the desk. "The ghost is finally buried."

Claire looked at her friend, a profound sense of closure washing over her. The legal battle, the corporate purges, the endless anxiety—it was all permanently finished.
"Yes," Claire smiled, a true, brilliant smile. "It's over. Now, let's finalize this Sterling contract. We have an empire to run."
