Chapter 18 - A Quiet Afternoon

|

The removal of the tax clause ensured the massive success of the European expansion, cementing Claire’s reputation as one of the most formidable corporate leaders in the country.

But amidst the victories, she cherished the quiet moments the most.

It was a rainy Sunday afternoon. Claire and Noah were sitting on the thick rug in the penthouse living room, completely surrounded by a sprawling, chaotic city built out of wooden blocks.

Noah, now six years old, was meticulously constructing a bridge between two "skyscrapers."

"This bridge has to be very strong, Mom," Noah explained seriously, carefully balancing a wooden plank. "So the cars don't fall in the river."

"You are an excellent engineer, Noah," Claire smiled, helping him steady the base of the bridge.

The front door chimed, and David Sterling walked in, shaking the rain from his coat. They had been quietly, seriously dating for six months, navigating their relationship with a mature, deliberate caution to protect Noah.

"David!" Noah cheered, abandoning his bridge and running over to give the tall man a high-five.

"Hey, buddy," David laughed, ruffling Noah's hair. "I brought reinforcements."

He pulled a massive box of complex, magnetic building tiles from a shopping bag. Noah's eyes widened with sheer delight, and he immediately dragged the box over to his wooden city to begin integrating the new materials.

David walked over and sat down on the rug beside Claire, completely ignoring the fact that he was wearing a thousand-dollar suit.

"You look beautiful," David murmured, kissing her softly on the cheek.

"I am covered in wooden blocks and I haven't brushed my hair," Claire laughed gently.

"My statement stands," David smiled, helping Noah attach a magnetic roof to a wooden tower.

Claire watched the two of them interact. David didn't try to play the authoritative father figure, nor did he treat Noah like an inconvenience. He simply engaged with him, patiently and genuinely.

It was a stark, beautiful contrast to the life she had once lived.

"We successfully closed the Berlin acquisition this morning," David mentioned casually, placing another tile on the roof.

"I saw the email," Claire replied. "Congratulations, partner."

"I couldn't have done it without your lobbying miracle in Washington," David acknowledged, looking at her with deep respect.

They sat together on the floor, building a chaotic, beautiful city with a six-year-old, finding perfect peace in the eye of their corporate storms.
