Chapter 13 - The First Birthday

|

Amidst the relentless demands of running an international corporation, Claire fiercely protected her time with Noah.

It was Noah's fifth birthday, and Claire had transformed the massive penthouse living room into a spectacular, pirate-themed wonderland. There were treasure chests filled with gold chocolate coins, a massive inflatable pirate ship, and a custom-made cake shaped like a galleon.

Elena was managing the chaotic swarm of kindergarteners, wearing a pirate hat and expertly mediating a dispute over a foam sword.

Claire stood near the kitchen island, watching the joyful mayhem unfold, holding a cup of coffee.

Katherine walked up beside her, expertly dodging a flying plastic cannonball.

"You really outdid yourself this year, Claire," Katherine laughed, watching Noah proudly wear an eyepatch while defending his inflatable ship.

"He deserves it," Claire smiled warmly. "This past year has been a massive transition for him. He lost his father, he moved, his entire world shifted. I wanted today to be perfect."

"He seems perfectly happy," Katherine observed. "Adrian never showed up for these things anyway. Noah probably hasn't even noticed his absence."

Claire’s smile faltered slightly. It was a harsh truth, but an accurate one. Adrian had always viewed Noah as a convenient prop for campaign photos or holiday cards, rarely interacting with him behind closed doors.

"He asked about him last week," Claire admitted quietly.

"What did you say?"

"I told him the truth. In a way a five-year-old can understand," Claire said, staring into her coffee cup. "I told him his father made some very bad choices and had to go away for a long time to learn how to follow the rules."

"That's a very diplomatic way to describe federal prison," Katherine snorted.

"I don't want Noah to hate him," Claire explained, looking up at her friend. "Hate is a heavy thing to carry. I just want him to know that actions have consequences, and that our home is safe."

"Mommy! Look!" Noah shouted, running over to her, holding up a brightly wrapped present. "Aunt Elena said I could open one early!"

"Well, if Aunt Elena authorized it, I suppose you must," Claire laughed, kneeling down to his level.

She watched her son tear into the wrapping paper, his face glowing with pure, unadulterated joy. The shadows of the past year were completely banished from this room. She had built a fortress of love and safety, and no one would ever breach it again.
