Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Purge

|

The emergency board meeting was scheduled for 10:00 AM.

Claire sat at the head of the massive, polished conference table. Twelve board members, most of them older men who had been hand-picked by Adrian's father, sat around her. They looked at her with a mixture of skepticism and barely concealed condescension.

"Let us be frank, Ms. Whitmore," Robert Sterling, the oldest member of the board, began, leaning heavily on the table. "We respect your family's legacy, but you have absolutely zero operational experience. The market is already reacting poorly to Adrian's sudden departure. We need an experienced interim CEO to stabilize the stock price."

Claire let him finish his speech. She didn't interrupt. She simply opened her leather portfolio and slid a thick stack of printed documents down the center of the table.

"What are these?" Robert asked, frowning at the papers.

"Those, Robert, are the forensic audit reports from the past thirty-six months," Claire stated, her voice carrying the cold, hard weight of absolute authority. "They detail exactly how Adrian diverted over fourteen million dollars of corporate funds into private offshore accounts, utilizing three of your personal shell companies to mask the transfers."

The color completely drained from Robert's face. The other board members shifted uncomfortably, staring at the documents as if they were venomous snakes.

"Adrian didn't just steal from my family's trust," Claire continued, looking directly at Robert. "He stole from this company. And several of you sitting at this table were complicit."

"These allegations are absurd," another board member sputtered, though his voice lacked conviction.

"They are heavily documented facts, and they have already been submitted to the SEC," Claire corrected smoothly. "I am not here to negotiate a transition period. I am here to clean house. Any board member whose name appears in that audit report is resigning, effective immediately. If you refuse, I will publicly release the unredacted files to the press before the market closes today."

Silence descended upon the boardroom, heavy and suffocating.

"You are dismantling the leadership of this company," Robert whispered, sounding defeated.

"I am removing a cancer," Claire corrected. "The leadership stays. Now, who would like a pen?"

By 11:00 AM, five senior board members had officially submitted their resignations. Claire had secured her empire.
