Chapter 8 - A Visit from the Past

The cleanup of the corporate headquarters took weeks of grueling, fourteen-hour days. Claire was ruthless in her restructuring, promoting brilliant, overlooked junior executives to fill the newly vacated senior positions.
She was sitting in her pristine, newly decorated corner office late on a Friday evening, reviewing a massive contract renewal, when her private intercom buzzed.
"Ms. Whitmore, I am so sorry to disturb you, but there is a woman in the lobby insisting on seeing you," the night security guard reported. "She doesn't have an appointment. Her name is Vanessa Reed."
Claire’s hand froze over the paperwork.
Vanessa Reed. Adrian's mistress. The woman who had worn Claire's jewelry, lived in an apartment funded by Claire's money, and actively helped Adrian attempt to hide the embezzled assets.
"Send her up," Claire instructed quietly.
Ten minutes later, the heavy oak doors opened. Vanessa walked in, looking entirely different from the glamorous, confident woman Claire had seen in the private investigator's photographs. She looked exhausted, her designer clothes rumpled, clutching a cheap canvas tote bag.
"Ms. Whitmore," Vanessa began, her voice trembling slightly.
"Sit down, Vanessa," Claire pointed to one of the guest chairs opposite her desk.
Vanessa sat down nervously, refusing to meet Claire's gaze.
"Why are you here?" Claire asked, her tone completely neutral.
"I have nothing," Vanessa blurted out, tears welling in her eyes. "Your lawyers seized the apartment. They took the car. They froze the bank accounts Adrian set up for me. I can't even afford to hire a lawyer to defend myself against the civil fraud charges your firm is threatening."
"You participated in a multi-million-dollar embezzlement scheme," Claire stated matter-of-factly. "You enjoyed the spoils of a crime. Did you expect to keep them?"
"I didn't know the money was stolen!" Vanessa cried, leaning forward desperately. "Adrian told me he was independently wealthy! He said you were a cold, vindictive woman who was dragging out the divorce to punish him. He promised me we were going to build a life together once he finalized the settlement."
Claire looked at the weeping woman across her desk. She didn't feel anger toward Vanessa. She felt a profound, chilling pity.
"He told you exactly what you wanted to hear, Vanessa," Claire said softly. "He told me the same things, once."
Vanessa wiped her eyes, looking up in surprise.
"I am not going to pursue the civil fraud charges against you," Claire announced, leaning back in her chair.
"You aren't?"
"No. You have already lost everything Adrian gave you. I don't need to destroy your life to reclaim mine," Claire explained. "However, if you ever attempt to contact Adrian, or if you ever speak to the press about my family, the lawsuit will be filed immediately. Do you understand?"
Vanessa nodded vigorously, relief flooding her features. "I understand. I swear it."

"Then you can leave."
Vanessa stood up, clutching her bag, and practically ran out of the office. Claire watched her go, realizing that Adrian hadn't just used her; he had used everyone who let him close enough to cause damage.
