Chapter 16 - The Art Exhibition

While Claire thrived in the corporate world, she realized she had deeply neglected the passions that used to bring her joy before her life became a battlefield.
Painting had always been her sanctuary. When Adrian was controlling every aspect of her reality, watercolor landscapes were the only things she could create that belonged entirely to her.
Upon returning from Europe, Claire decided to reclaim that part of herself.
She quietly rented a small, beautiful gallery space in Georgetown under a pseudonym. She spent her late evenings and early mornings painting, pouring her complex journey of survival, betrayal, and eventual triumph onto large, vivid canvases.
She didn't invite the press, the board members, or the political elite to the opening night. She only invited a small, carefully curated list of close friends and family.
Elena walked into the gallery on opening night, her jaw dropping as she looked at the walls.
"Claire, these are magnificent," Elena breathed, walking up to a massive canvas depicting a violent storm breaking over a dark ocean, with a single, brilliant ray of sunlight piercing the clouds.
"Thank you," Claire smiled, feeling a vulnerable, terrifying kind of pride she rarely experienced in the boardroom.
Katherine arrived a few minutes later, holding a glass of wine and scrutinizing a painting of a shattered glass cage.
"You aren't going to sell these, are you?" Katherine asked.
"No," Claire said softly. "They aren't for sale. I just needed to put them out in the world. I needed to prove to myself that he didn't destroy this part of me."
Suddenly, the gallery door opened, and David Sterling walked in.
Claire was surprised. She hadn't sent an invitation to his office.
"David," Claire greeted him, walking over. "How did you find out about this?"
"Katherine might have let it slip during a conference call," David admitted with a charming, apologetic smile. He looked around the room, his eyes scanning the powerful, emotional artwork.
He stopped in front of the painting of the storm.
"These are incredibly powerful, Claire," David said, his voice quiet and sincere. "I knew you were a brilliant strategist, but I had no idea you possessed this kind of depth."
"There are many things you don't know about me, David," Claire replied, a playful, confident edge to her tone.

"I look forward to discovering all of them," David promised, holding her gaze for a long, electric moment.
For the first time in years, Claire felt a genuine spark of romantic interest. It wasn't the desperate, naive hope she had felt with Adrian. It was a grounded, mature connection, built on mutual respect and shared power.
