Chapter 20 - The Unlocked Door

|
Five years after the divorce, Claire sat on the terrace of her penthouse, exactly where she had sat on that crisp morning when Katherine first delivered the news of Adrian's downfall.
The morning air was warm, carrying the scent of blooming cherry blossoms from the parks below.
Noah, now nine years old, was inside the living room, working diligently on a complex science project for school. He was happy, healthy, and completely untouched by the darkness that had once threatened to consume their lives.
David stepped out onto the terrace, holding two cups of Earl Grey tea. He placed one in front of Claire and sat down beside her, his presence a steady, comforting anchor.
"The board approved the final budget for the Asian expansion," David reported casually, taking a sip of his tea.
"I knew they would," Claire smiled, not looking away from the horizon.
They sat in comfortable, profound silence, watching the city wake up below them.
"I received a letter from Adrian's legal team yesterday," Claire mentioned quietly, her voice entirely devoid of emotion.
David turned to look at her, a flicker of protective concern in his eyes. "What did they want?"
"He's up for a procedural sentence review next month. They wanted me to submit a letter supporting a transfer to a minimum-security facility," Claire explained, tracing the rim of her teacup.
"What did you tell them?"
"I didn't reply," Claire said simply. "I put the letter in the shredder."
David smiled, a slow, deeply respectful expression. "A very efficient response."
Claire stood up, walking over to the glass railing. She looked down at the river, moving steadily and powerfully, entirely unbothered by the obstacles in its path.
She thought about the woman she used to be—terrified, silent, constantly managing a monster's ego just to survive. That woman felt like a ghost, a character in a story that belonged to someone else.
She had not only survived the cage; she had dismantled it, melted the iron down, and forged a sword.
David walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder.

"What are you thinking about?" David murmured.
"I'm thinking that the door is finally, permanently open," Claire said softly, leaning back against him, surrounded by the beautiful, unbreakable empire she had built entirely on her own terms.
