The Boundary of Protection
Alejandro stared at the envelope. His breathing grew heavy. The past rushed back. The images of Elena being psychologically tortured, imprisoned, the sheer terror in her eyes the day he found her.
He was about to crush the letter. His hand moved it toward the shredder. He didn't want anything from that filthy past touching Elena’s life, especially not now.
But an invisible force stopped him. He took a deep breath, sliced the envelope open, and unfolded the thin piece of paper.

The letter was very short, the handwriting slightly trembling:
"Mr. Castillo. My family destroyed your life and your wife's. I do not expect your forgiveness. But I will be released next month. I have nothing left. No money, no family, no future. I only ask you for one single favor: please let me work for your charity foundation. Cleaning, carrying boxes, maintenance, anything. I want to spend the rest of my life working to atone for the sins my bloodline committed."
