The Reflection

Alejandro stirred on the large bed. When his arm reached out and felt only cold, empty space, the vigilant instincts forged during his darkest days immediately woke him. But then, he saw her.

Elena was standing in front of the mirror, the morning light wrapping around her like a halo.

He slowly stepped out of bed, approaching her with soundless footsteps. Alejandro’s familiar, solid, and warm arms enveloped her entirely from behind. He rested his head on her shoulder, breathing in her familiar scent of jasmine.

"You're awake early again."

Alejandro whispered, his deep voice resonating in the quiet room as he pressed a soft kiss to her silky hair.

"I couldn't sleep."

Elena replied softly, leaning her head against his chest.

"Why? Is something worrying you?"

His voice immediately tinged with tension.

Elena smiled, looking at their reflection in the mirror. She saw a man who had once been ready to burn the world down, to slaughter anyone who dared stand in his way to find her. And she saw herself—a woman who once thought she would rot and die forever in the darkness of a cruel birdcage.

Now, they were both standing in the light.
