Chapter 35 - The Silent Horizon

|

I walked toward the waiting helicopter, my heels clicking firmly against the pavement. The pilot slid open the door, offering his hand, but I stepped up smoothly on my own, settling into the plush leather interior.

Sarah Lin sat across from me, handing me a small silver tray holding a glass of sparkling water and a fresh secure tablet.

"Where to, Director Sterling?" the pilot asked over the headset.

"Take us over the Hudson, then heading toward the new international development site in London," I instructed calmly.

As the helicopter lifted off into the bright, clear blue sky, rising high above the glittering towers of the city I now conquered, I looked out the window at my reflection in the glass.

I didn't cry. I didn't look back. I simply smiled.

Suddenly, the secure tablet in my lap chimed with a double ping.

I looked down. The screen lit up with an encrypted message from a non-registered international satellite relay based in Zurich.

The message read:

"Impressive performance, Empress Sterling. You dismantled Richard Hayes, crushed Arthur Vance, and absorbed Vanguard Apex. But did you really believe Vanguard Apex was the apex of the pyramid? We have been watching your foundation from Geneva. The real board meeting begins next month. Welcome to the Global Table."

Attached to the message was a high-resolution satellite photograph of my rooftop helipad taken just three minutes ago—with a small red circle drawn around my mother's golden signet ring on my hand.

Sarah noticed my sudden silence. "Director Sterling? Is everything alright?"

I slowly leaned back against the plush leather seat, sliding my fingers over the golden signet ring on my finger.

I looked out the window at the endless horizon stretching far beyond the city skyline.

"Sarah," I said, a dangerous, thrilling smile spreading across my lips.

"Yes, Director?"

"Tell the legal team to prepare the global expansion portfolio," I instructed softly, watching the clouds drift past the window. "It seems our real work has only just begun."

The helicopter soared higher into the infinite blue sky, carrying the Empress toward her next battle.
