I left the prison in silence, the rain drumming relentlessly against the roof of my private SUV as we drove back toward Manhattan.
"Director Sterling," Sarah Lin said gently from the front seat. "Are you alright? You haven't said a word since we left the facility."
"Take me to the family estate in Westchester," I ordered quietly. "The old Sterling manor."
"The manor?" Sarah looked back, surprised. "It's been abandoned since your mother passed away ten years ago."
"That’s where her private vault is," I replied.
An hour later, we pulled up to a grand, overgrown estate surrounded by rusty iron gates. The stone mansion stood like a silent sentinel against the grey stormy sky.
I used an old brass key from my mother’s velvet jewelry box—the only item Adrian had failed to locate years ago—to unlock the heavy mahogany front doors.
Inside, dust sheets covered the grand furniture. I walked directly into my mother's private study on the second floor, moving toward the floor-to-ceiling bookshelf.
I pulled the third volume of a leather-bound poetry book. A soft mechanical click echoed through the room, and the bookshelf swung open to reveal a small, hidden steel safe.
Using my mother's birthday as the combination, I spun the dial. 0-4-1-2.
Click.
The heavy safe door swung open. Inside lay a single leather binder and an antique golden signet ring bearing the crest of Sterling Imperial crossed with a crest of a coiled serpent—the exact symbol of Vanguard Apex.

I opened the binder. The top page was a handwritten letter in my mother's delicate calligraphy:
"To my darling Elena: If you are reading this, Arthur Vance and his family have tried to take what is rightfully ours. Vanguard Apex was created to protect the Sterling empire from corporate vultures. The master encryption key to the seventy-seven million dollar global ledger is in this ring. Do not fear the power, my daughter. Rule it."
