Chapter 24 - Traitor in the Ranks

|

The metal gate of the underground parking garage slammed down just as David Miller’s black Mercedes pulled up to the exit.

Before Miller could reverse, three armored Sterling Imperial security vehicles blocked his path, trapping his car in a box formation.

I stepped out of the private elevator, accompanied by my brother Ben and two armed security officers. My heels clicked loudly against the concrete floor as I walked toward his driver's side window.

Ben tapped his badge against the glass. "Step out of the car, Miller. Now."

David Miller stumbled out of the vehicle, his face pale and sweating profusely under the harsh halogen garage lights. He clutched a leather briefcase tightly to his chest.

"Elena! Please! I can explain!" Miller stammered, backing away until his back hit the side of his car.

"You sold the locations of my women's shelters to Vanguard Apex, didn't you, David?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly soft.

"They threatened my family!" Miller wept, shaking uncontrollably. "Vanguard Apex... they have people everywhere! They paid me two million dollars to get those shelter files and your foundation's financial ledgers!"

I reached out and plucked the leather briefcase directly from his hands. Opening it, I found an encrypted flash drive and three stacks of offshore bearer bonds.

"You traded the safety of abused women for two million dollars," I said, looking at him with utter disgust.

"Please, Elena! Don't ruin me! I'll give the money back!" Miller sobbed, falling to his knees on the concrete floor.

"You aren't giving anything back, David," I replied, handing the flash drive to Ben. "Ben, hand this over to the federal prosecutor. Include a charge of corporate espionage and reckless endangerment."

I looked down at the kneeling traitor one last time.

"You thought Vanguard Apex was terrifying?" I whispered coldly. "You should have been far more afraid of me."
