Chapter 16 - The Shadow of Vanguard

|

The hospital room was quiet except for the steady monitor beep and Clara's soft breathing. I held her against my chest, watching her tiny hand curl around my thumb. After years of isolation and fear under Adrian Caldwell’s thumb, this little life was my entire world.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed on the glass nightstand. I picked it up, expecting a message from my brother Ben or my attorney, Natalie Brooks.

Instead, the screen flickered dark, displaying a message from an encrypted number:

"Congratulations on the birth of your daughter, Elena. Adrian Caldwell was merely a pawn who got greedy. Do not mistake his pathetic fall for your victory. Aegis Capital and Vanguard Apex have deep roots. You owe seventy-seven million dollars in liquidated assets, and in our world, debts are paid in blood or gold."

My heart hammered against my ribs, but I did not tremble. I refused to be the helpless woman who shrank into corners.

"Who sent this?" I whispered to the empty room.

Sarah Lin stepped into the recovery suite, holding a stack of legal folders and a cup of black coffee. She noticed my rigid posture immediately.

"Director Sterling? Is everything alright?" Sarah asked, her sharp eyes scanning my face.

"Aegis Capital isn't dead, Sarah," I said, handing her the phone. "Adrian was just the foot soldier. Someone named Richard Hayes and an offshore entity called Vanguard Apex are pulling the strings behind the scenes."

Sarah read the message, her brow furrowing in deep concern. "Should we alert the federal authorities? Your brother could contact the District Attorney."

"No," I replied, my voice turning to liquid steel. "Law enforcement handles street criminals. I handle corporate parasites. They want seventy-seven million dollars? I’m going to make sure they lose every cent they have left."

I looked down at Clara, her peaceful face bathed in the morning sunlight.

"They think they can intimidate a mother," I said softly. "They are about to learn what happens when you threaten an empress."
