Chapter 30 - The Price of Silence

|

That evening, Julian Cross invited me to a private celebratory dinner at an exclusive rooftop restaurant overlooking the Hudson River.

The autumn breeze was crisp, carrying the scent of rain and city asphalt. Glass walls shielded us from the wind as we sat at a secluded corner table.

"To the complete dismantling of Aegis Capital," Julian said, raising his crystal glass of vintage wine.

I clinked my glass against his. "And to the total absorption of Vanguard Apex."

Julian paused, setting his glass down slowly. His blue eyes locked onto mine with intense focus.

"Elena," Julian began, his tone growing serious. "Now that you hold the master signet ring and control the majority shares of Vanguard Apex, you hold enormous power. Power that Wall Street fears."

"Is that why you helped me, Julian?" I asked, cutting straight to the chase. "To gain access to my mother's offshore network?"

Julian chuckled smoothly, leaning back in his chair. "I am a businessman, Elena. I saw an unstoppable force rising from the ashes of a tragic marriage. But now, other global syndicates are watching you. They want to buy out Vanguard Apex's remaining debts for a billion dollars."

"And if I refuse to sell?" I asked, my voice completely unbothered.

"If you refuse, they will wage a war against Sterling Holdings that will make Richard Hayes look like an amateur," Julian warned softly. "Take the billion dollars, Elena. Retire with your daughter. You've won your revenge."

I looked out over the glittering city skyline, the lights reflecting in my eyes.

"I didn't do all of this for revenge, Julian," I answered, turning back to him with a look of absolute authority. "Revenge is fleeting. I built an empire. And an empress does not sell her crown for a billion dollars."

Julian stared at me for a long moment, then slowly smiled with deep respect. "Then God help anyone who stands in your way."
