Chapter 7 - Two Million Reasons|

Evelyn took a small sip of her ice water before continuing.
"When Thomas and I were young, we lived very modestly," she began. "Thomas built a successful commercial electrical contracting company. We invested consistently, paid off our home in Sequoyah Hills decades ago, and acquired two commercial rental properties downtown before the market surged."
She paused, looking directly into my eyes.
"Between the real estate, retirement portfolios, liquid investments, and life insurance policies, my estate is currently valued at just over two point two million dollars."
I gasped, nearly choking on my own air.
Ryan had always described his parents' financial situation as "comfortable." He made it sound like they had just enough to cover their medical bills and modest groceries.
Apparently, "comfortable" meant multi-millions.
"For the past twenty years," Evelyn explained calmly, "my will dictated that my estate would be split equally between Ryan and his sister, Beth."
"And what did you do at the bank today?" I asked, my heart pounding.
"I changed it."
"Changed it to what?"
"That remains private for now."
"Evelyn, you handed me a key to something private!"
"The key is merely a temporary precaution."
"What does it open?"
"A safe deposit box."
I slumped back against the vinyl booth.
"Evelyn, I am not getting dragged into a war between you and your biological children."
"Claire, you were dragged into it the moment you married him."
My throat felt dry.
She leaned forward, placing her hand over mine.
"Every single time Ryan refused to help me and you showed up in his place, you got in the middle. Every time you picked up my prescriptions, every time you organized my medical files, every time you bought the birthday cards he carelessly scribbled his name on—you stepped into the middle."
A burning heat rushed up into my neck and cheeks.
"I never did any of that for your money, Evelyn! I swear to you!"
"I know," she replied gently. "And that exact truth is the sole reason you are sitting across from me today."
She patted my hand.
"I am not leaving you a multi-million dollar fortune, Claire."
"Good. I don't want it."
"And that response," she chuckled softly, "is why I trust you."
Then, her expression turned dead serious.
"Thomas kept meticulous financial records. Every loan. Every advance. Every check."
"What loans?" I asked, confused.

Evelyn studied my face carefully.
"Did Ryan really never tell you?"
