Chapter 11 - Box Number 402|

I picked up the original copy of the 2019 loan document.

There was Ryan’s signature, bold and arrogant, right above a structured repayment schedule requiring two hundred dollars a month.

"How much of this thirty thousand did he actually pay back?" I asked Samuel.

Samuel pulled up a ledger sheet.

"Four thousand dollars total. He stopped making payments after fourteen months."

I let out a single, bitter laugh.

"And what happens to the remaining balance now?"

Evelyn rested her hands over her leather purse.

"My updated estate plan explicitly dictates that all documented, unpaid loans will be subtracted directly from Ryan’s final inheritance share."

The sudden panic Ryan exhibited over the weekend finally made complete sense.

"He knows," I realized aloud. "He realized you were updating the documents."

"He suspected as much," Samuel confirmed.

"And what about the rest of the estate?" I asked Evelyn.

"Half of the remaining estate will go to his sister, Beth," Evelyn explained. "A quarter will go to Ryan, minus his debts. The remaining large portion will be used to establish a charitable trust."

"What kind of trust?"

"An organization dedicated to funding reliable transportation, home repairs, and grocery deliveries for low-income senior citizens in East Tennessee."

I looked at her, deeply moved.

"Did you create that foundation because Ryan refused to drive you to the bank on Saturday?"

"No," Evelyn answered immediately. "That would be petty and childish."

She looked down at her husband's handwriting on the folder.

"I initiated this legal process six months ago."

"Why?"

"Because I realized my adult children were discussing my eventual death with far more enthusiasm than they ever showed while talking to me during my life."

The heavy statement echoed off the cold walls of the vault.

Samuel cleared his throat, pulling another document from his briefcase.

"There is one more matter, Mrs. Mercer. Evelyn has requested that you be appointed as the sole Successor Trustee of her estate."

I immediately backed my chair away from the table.

"No. Absolutely not."
