Chapter 5 - The Brass Key|

Evelyn reached inside her handbag and pulled out a small object.
It was an antique brass key, no longer than my thumb, attached to a plain metal ring. Without a word, she reached over and pressed it firmly into the center of my palm.
"Put this somewhere safe," she instructed quietly. "Somewhere Ryan will never, ever think to look."
I reflexively tried to pull my hand back.
"No. Absolutely not, Evelyn."
"Claire, listen to me—"
"No," I insisted, shaking my head. "I am not keeping secrets from my husband. I won't do it."
Evelyn leaned in, her cool fingers wrapping around mine, forcing my hand closed around the metal.
"Then hide it from a man who happens to be your husband," she said, her voice dropping to a fierce whisper.
I stared at her, stunned by the intensity in her blue eyes.
"What does this key open?"
"You’ll find out soon enough."
"Evelyn, please."
She took a slow breath, leaning back against the leather seat.
"My son thinks I am old enough to be completely ignored, yet wealthy enough to be eagerly inherited."
The air inside the small car felt heavy and thin.
Evelyn looked down at my closed fist, her voice barely audible.
"This morning, he stood in your kitchen and told me to figure it out."
She looked back up at me, a cold smile touching her lips.
"So I did."
"What did you do in that bank?" I whispered.
"I altered the one single outcome Ryan has been banking on for the last fifteen years."
Before I could press her further, my phone began to vibrate violently in the cup holder.
The screen flashed bright red text.
RYAN.
A second later, the call missed and another incoming call replaced it.
RYAN.
Then a text notification popped up on the lock screen:
What did my mother just give you? Tell me right now.
I looked up from the screen to meet Evelyn’s steady gaze.
In that terrifying moment, a sudden realization struck me like a bucket of ice water.
May you like
My husband had not been indifferent to his mother's request for a ride to the bank.
He had been utterly terrified of it.
