Chapter 13 - The Mask Crumbles|

Ryan slammed his hand down on the quartz countertop.

"What else did she tell you in that bank?" he demanded.

I stared at him, suddenly realizing something horrifying.

He didn't care about my shattered trust. He didn't care about the pain of his deceit. He only cared about protecting his share of the multi-million dollar estate.

"She asked me to serve as the Successor Trustee," I said quietly.

Ryan spun around, his eyes wide with fury.

"What?!"

"I haven't accepted the role yet."

"You are not accepting it!" he commanded, stepping toward me.

I looked at him with cool detachment.

"You don't get to dictate my choices anymore, Ryan."

"I am your husband!"

"Yes," I said, looking at him closely. "And that title feels incredibly meaningless right now."

He turned and gestured wildly toward the front door.

"You have systematically inserted yourself into my family’s private financial affairs!"

"Your mother literally begged for my help because her own son refused to take her to the bank!"

"Because you've been manipulating her behind my back!" he bellowed.

My entire body went completely still.

"Excuse me?"

"You're always over at her house!" he sneered. "Fixing things, taking her places, charming her! You played the long game!"

"I was over there because you weren't!" I shouted back. "I was doing your job as a son!"

He opened his mouth to deliver another furious rebuttal, but no sound came out. He just stood there, panting, his face contorted in anger.

For eighteen years, I would have stepped in to defuse the tension. I would have softened my words, offered an excuse for his outbursts, or found a way to comfort him.

Not tonight.

I stood silently in the kitchen and watched the man I married crumble under the weight of his own arrogance.

Three days later, Ryan made a fatal mistake.

He contacted a high-powered elder-law litigation attorney in Nashville.

I discovered it completely by accident on Thursday afternoon.
