Chapter 14 - The Laptop Screen|

I had gone upstairs to our home office to print out a routine health insurance claim form for Lily.
Ryan had left his work laptop open on the desk, the screen glowing in the quiet room. I wasn't searching for anything secret. But as I reached for the wireless mouse, my eyes caught my own name highlighted in the subject line of an open email draft:
RE: CLAIRE MERCER — POTENTIAL UNDUE INFLUENCE CONCERNS
My hand froze over the mouse.
I knew I should have turned around and walked away. I knew I should have respected his privacy.
Instead, I sat down in the office chair and read the email line by line.
The message was addressed to a senior litigation partner at a law firm in Nashville.
In the email, Ryan claimed that his seventy-eight-year-old mother was becoming "increasingly vulnerable and emotionally dependent" on me.
He wrote that I had "aggressively positioned myself as Evelyn’s primary gatekeeper, effectively blocking her biological children from managing her affairs."
He asked the attorney how to file for court-ordered conservatorship over Evelyn's estate, citing concerns about her mental decline.
Then came the final sentence that shattered the remaining pieces of my marriage:
I believe my wife may be intentionally isolating my mother from her biological family in order to exert financial influence and secure personal control over the estate.
I sat at the desk, reading that sentence three separate times.
Isolating her.
Me.
The woman who spent her weekends driving Evelyn to her doctor appointments.
The woman who took her grocery shopping after her cataract surgery.
The woman who organized her milestone birthday parties.
The woman who spent Christmas Eve fixing her frozen water pipes while Ryan stayed home watching football.
For eighteen years, I had worked tirelessly to keep Evelyn connected to her son. And now, Ryan was using my love and dedication as legal evidence to brand me an elder abuser.
Heavy footsteps sounded on the wooden stairs outside the office door.
Ryan walked into the room, holding a mug of coffee. The moment his eyes met mine, he froze.
"You read my email," he said quietly.
"You called me an abuser, Ryan."
"I did not use that word."
"You told a legal firm that I am isolating your mother to steal her money!"
"I said the situation could be legally interpreted that way!" he argued, setting his coffee down.
"Interpreted by whom?!" I yelled, standing up. "By a judge?! Were you seriously planning to declare your own mother mentally incompetent?!"
"I was seeking professional advice to protect her!"
"Protect her from me?!"
"Protect her from anyone manipulating her decision-making!"
May you like
I stared at him with pure disgust.
"You mean protect her from diverting your multi-million dollar inheritance!"
