Chapter 16 - The Power of Attorney Trap|

The unexpected meeting took place on a rainy Tuesday evening around Evelyn’s polished mahogany dining room table.
Beth had driven down from Chattanooga, looking pale and nervous. Ryan arrived carrying a thick navy-blue binder.
Evelyn had insisted that I attend.
"I don't want to make things worse between you and your children," I had protested over the phone.
"You aren't making anything worse, Claire," she had answered firmly. "My son is doing that all by himself."
As we sat around the table, Ryan opened his binder and slid two crisp legal documents toward his mother.
"This is just a standard safety precaution, Mom," Ryan said smoothly.
Evelyn adjusted her reading glasses and looked down at the title of the pages: GENERAL POWER OF ATTORNEY & HEALTHCARE PROXY.
"A precaution against what, Ryan?" she asked calmly.
"In case something unexpected happens to your health."
"Something eventually happens to everyone's health, dear."
"Mom, please just sign it," Beth pleaded softly, her hands trembling. "We just want to make sure everything is handled smoothly."
Evelyn looked at the signature lines at the bottom of the page.
"Who would hold total legal authority over my finances and medical care under this agreement?"
"Beth and me," Ryan answered immediately. "As your biological children."
Evelyn set her glasses down on the table.
"I have already legally designated my power of attorney."
Ryan’s posture went completely rigid.
"Who? Claire?"
"No," Evelyn replied smoothly.
"Then who?!" Ryan demanded.
"My attorney has the documents sealed in his office."
"Why won't you tell your own family?!"
Evelyn looked at her son with deep sorrow.
"Because you are repeatedly confusing legal access with true love."
The dining room fell into a heavy silence.
Ryan’s face turned bright red. He suddenly whipped around and pointed an angry finger at me.
"She has completely brainwashed you!" he shouted.
Evelyn slammed her palm down on the table.
"Stop it right now!"
The sharp slap echoed off the walls. She had never raised her voice at her son in her entire life.
"You will not sit inside my home and address me as if I am a senile fool simply because I made a personal choice you dislike!" she commanded.
"I am trying to protect you!" Ryan yelled back.
"No, Ryan," Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a dangerously quiet register. "You are trying to protect an inheritance you feel entitled to."
Beth burst into tears, covering her face. Ryan ignored his weeping sister, glaring at his mother.
"This entire nightmare started the moment Claire drove you to that bank!"
May you like
Evelyn leaned across the table, her blue eyes flashing with unyielding strength.
"No, Ryan. This changed the exact moment I realized you could picture my funeral far more easily than you could imagine driving me fifteen minutes downtown."
