Chapter 4 - Gay Street|

Before I could ask another question, Evelyn opened the door and stepped out into the crisp air, leaving me alone with my chaotic thoughts.

I sat in the idling car and waited.

Ten minutes passed. Then twenty. Then thirty.

At the forty-minute mark, I was just about to unbuckle my seatbelt and go inside to check on her when my cell phone vibrated violently against the console.

It was Ryan.

I hit answer.

"Where are you?" he demanded without a greeting.

"Downtown," I answered coolly.

"Are you still with Mom?"

"Yes."

A heavy pause echoed over the line.

"What on earth is taking so long down there?"

I stared through the windshield at the bank's grand glass doors.

"That’s a remarkably strange question coming from the man who flatly refused to drive her."

"I’m just asking a simple question, Claire."

"No, you're not asking. You're fishing."

His tone hardened instantly.

"Did she happen to tell you what she’s doing inside?"

"No, she didn't."

Another long, suspicious silence followed.

"Claire," Ryan said, his voice dropping into a tense whisper. "If Mom hands you anything—any documents, any envelopes—you tell me immediately."

A cold shudder ran down my spine despite the car's heater blowing warm air on my feet.

"Why would she give me anything?"

"I don’t know."

"Then why sound so paranoid?"

"I'm not worried!" he snapped.

"I didn't say you were worried, Ryan. You just used that word yourself."

He let out an angry breath and slammed the phone down, ending the call abruptly.

Three minutes later, the glass doors of the bank pushed open, and Evelyn walked out. She was walking with a steady, purposeful stride. She looked entirely calm.

In fact, she looked terrifyingly calm.

She opened the passenger door, slipped inside, pulled the door shut, and carefully placed her purse across her lap.

"How about some lunch?" she asked pleasantly.

I turned in my seat to face her.

"Your son just called me. He demanded to know if you handed me anything."

For the first time all morning, the calm composure on Evelyn’s face cracked. It wasn't shock or anger.

It was deep, heartbreaking disappointment.

"So he knows," she murmured.

"Knows what, Evelyn?"

She unzipped a small, concealed compartment inside her leather purse.
