Chapter 18 - The Final Words

The federal agents stepped up behind Julián, grabbing his arms firmly to place him in handcuffs.

"Claudia... please,"
Julián begged, his mouth completely dry, his voice barely a raspy whisper.
"You can't do this to me. I'm your husband."
Claudia took a slow, deliberate step toward him. She stopped just close enough so that only he could hear her final words.
"You promised me for years that you would leave me abandoned in absolute poverty,"
Claudia whispered, her voice as cold and unbreakable as steel.
"But now, you are going to have to explain to a federal criminal judge exactly how you tried to steal the life of a woman you mistakenly believed was broken."

Julián slowly lowered his head, utterly defeated. The handcuffs clicked shut.
Renata sobbed hysterically in the background, clutching her expensive designer purse tightly to her chest, as if she could somehow salvage a tiny piece of her glamorous lie.
