Chapter 5 - THE CORNERED BEAST|

Inside the penthouse executive suite of Hail Development, glass bottles were smashing against the wall.

"Who leaked it?!" Beckett Hail roared, his face flushed red, his tie pulled loose from his collar. "Find out who filmed that video and buy them off! I don't care if it costs half a million!"

Dario Shimansky sat on the leather couch, dabbing her eyes with a handkerchief, looking delicate and distressed.

"Beck," Dario whimpered softly. "The board is calling every five minutes. The city's waterfront committee is threatening to freeze the $42M contract until an internal investigation is completed!"

"The contract is fine!" Beck snapped, pacing the carpet like a caged animal. "Imara is throwing a routine tantrum. She’ll come back. She always comes back when she runs out of money."

He grabbed his phone and dialed Imara's number again.

The call was immediately forwarded to automated voicemail.

"Dammit!" Beck slammed his fist onto his mahogany desk.

Suddenly, his secretary pushed open the double doors without knocking, her face pale white.

"Mr. Hail," she stammered, holding out a stack of legal documents. "There are four process servers and two uniformed officers in the lobby."

Beck snatched the papers from her hand.

At the top of the first document, stamped in red ink by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, were the words:

EMERGENCY EX PARTE RESTRAINING ORDER & ASSET FREEZE.

Beck’s eyes scanned the legal text in disbelief.

Respondent Beckett Hail is hereby prohibited from approaching Imara Coulson Hail within 500 meters... All joint marital accounts, property lines, and corporate distributions under Hail Development tied to Coulson IP are temporarily frozen pending judicial review.

Beck dropped the papers, his chest heaving.

"She didn't just leave me," Beck whispered, looking at Dario with sudden, cold horror. "She's trying to bankrupt me."
