Chapter 13 - BECK'S DESPERATION|

News of the baby’s birth leaked to the press twenty-four hours later.

In a dingy, dark hotel room near Pearson Airport, Beckett Hail sat on the edge of a unmade bed, staring at a tabloid headline on his laptop screen:

IMARA COULSON GIVES BIRTH TO DAUGHTER MAYA—PROPERTY MOGUL BECKETT HAIL HELD AT BAY.

A half-empty bottle of cheap bourbon sat on the nightstand beside his ankle monitor charger.

His empire was gone. His townhouse was listed for power of sale. His reputation was reduced to a viral video of cowardice.

"My daughter..." Beck whispered, his voice cracking as he looked at the pixelated image of Mount Sinai Hospital. "She had my daughter."

He grabbed his coat, pulled it over his stained shirt, and walked toward the door.

His ankle monitor emitted a low, warning beep.

He didn't care.

He walked out into the cold night air, flagged down a passing cab, and threw a two-hundred-dollar bill at the driver.

"Take me to Mount Sinai Hospital," Beck ordered, his eyes bloodshot and unblinking. "And drive fast."
