Chapter 15 - THE TRIAL OF BECKETT HAIL|

Three months later.
The Ontario Superior Court of Justice was packed to capacity. Journalists, photographers, and city officials filled every bench.
Beckett Hail sat at the defense table wearing an oversized suit that hung loosely off his gaunt frame. His hair was streaked with gray, his cheeks sunken.
Sitting across the aisle at the prosecution table was Imara. She wore a tailored ivory coat, looking radiant, poised, and utterly transformed.
The judge slammed her gavel down. CRACK.
"We are here today for sentencing in the matter of The Crown vs. Beckett Hail," Judge Morrison announced, looking over her glasses at Beck.
Beck’s defense attorney stood up. "Your Honor, my client has shown immense remorse. He lost his business, his social standing, and his family. We ask for a suspended sentence with community service."
Judge Morrison looked down at the court documents, then looked directly at Beckett.
"Mr. Hail," the judge said, her voice echoed through the courtroom. "The assault on your pregnant wife was caught on clear video, witnessed by two hundred people. But what is far more damning is your complete disregard for the law following your arrest—including breaching a protective order to harass a recovering mother in a hospital wing."
The courtroom was dead silent.
"This court sentences you to two years at the Millhaven Institution, followed by three years of strict probation," Judge Morrison declared, bringing her gavel down hard. CRACK. "Court is adjourned."
Imara watched as the guards led Beck away in leg shackles.
As he walked past her row, Beck paused for a second, looking at her with hollow, desperate eyes.

"Imara..." he whispered, his voice trembling. "Please..."
Imara turned her face toward the window, refusing to offer him even a glance.
